Vocalise is a song by Sergei Rachmaninov, composed and published in 1915 as the last of his 14 Songs or 14 Romances, Op. 34. Written for high voice (soprano or tenor) with piano accompaniment, it contains no words, but is sung using any one vowel of the singer’s choosing. It was dedicated to soprano Antonina Nezhdanova. Vocalise has been arranged for piano solo and many different instrument combinations.

I first purchased the violin version, because it listed viola as an option. The part was for violin, though, including the fingerings etc. And it is in unnecessarily high positions when played with viola.
Later I found that the cello version is in a key (can´t remember which) that made it possible to use the piano part of the cello version and play the violin part with a viola together.
This combination of versions puts the melody in the natural register of viola and produces a nice result.
